Why roses from the Colombian highlands travel so well
Colombia is one of the world’s leading flower exporters, and the United States is its largest market. The conditions on the high plateau around Bogota are a big part of why.

Close to the equator
Near the equator, day length changes very little through the year. That steady light lets farms grow and cut roses in every season, not just in summer.

Grown high
Much of Colombia’s rose growing happens on the Sabana de Bogota, a plateau around 2,600 m above sea level. Cool nights slow the plant down, which growers credit for bigger heads and deeper color.

Strong stems, firm heads
Roses are cut at the tight-bud stage, then graded, bunched and cooled on the farm. Straight stems and firm heads hold up well on the trip north.

Long vase life, with good care
Kept cold and handled well, Colombian roses typically last around 7 to 10 days in the vase. Recut, clean water and a cool room make the difference.
Every August, Medellin’s Feria de las Flores fills the streets with silleteros carrying silletas, wooden frames covered in flowers, on their backs. It is the country’s own proof of how seriously Colombia takes its flowers.

Roses are perishable, so the whole trip is about keeping them cold and moving. From harvest to a US wholesale customer typically takes about 3 to 7 days.

Roses are cut at the tight-bud stage, then graded by stem length, bunched and put into water.

Bunches are boxed and cooled on the farm, kept cold at around 33–36 °F, and shipped with an ICA phytosanitary certificate.

Air freight to Miami
A flight of about 3 to 4 hours brings the boxes to Miami, the main US gateway for imported flowers.

Customs & inspection
U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists inspect shipments and clear them, usually within hours.

- Our roses grow high in the Colombian Andes, about two thousand six hundred meters up, all year round.
- We choose our farms by hand, agree on varieties and stem lengths, and set up standing weekly orders.
- Each rose is cut while the bud is still closed, so it opens in your shop, not on the road. Right after cutting, it’s put into water to stay hydrated.
- Then they’re graded by stem length and head size, bunched, sleeved, and chilled before packing.
- A phytosanitary certificate from I.C.A., Colombia’s plant-health authority, travels with every shipment.
- Refrigerated trucks carry the boxes to Bogotá’s El Dorado airport, and onto cargo flights.
- The flight to Miami takes three to four hours. Miami is the main U.S. gateway for fresh flowers.
- U.S. agriculture specialists check for pests, and customs clears the entry, usually within hours.
- Refrigerated trucks carry the roses on. We recut, hydrate, and deliver to florists, planners, and retailers.
